The company was founded in the 1930s by Jack Kirk. In 1963, Alan Stewart bought the business, and it has been a family-run business ever since. In 1999, Alan Stewart’s son, Oliver, took over the business and continues to run the company today.

J Kirk & Co are ACMS (Approved Coal Merchant Scheme) registered and are also a member of the CMF (Coal Merchants Federation).
